This is a simple, classic burger. Can be prepared from overnight, cling-wrapped and refrigerated.

Steps

1
Done

Using 4 tsp. oil, fry onions for roughly 10 minutes, over medium heat until golden. Add salt and ¼ tsp. pepper, mix in and cover the pan to keep warm.

2
Done

While the onions are cooking, combine the meat, ½ tsp. ground pepper, garlic and Worcestershire sauce.

3
Done

Divide mixture into 8 balls. Shape each one into a 4” wide patty. Spread the cheese atop 4 of them, then cover over with the remaining 4. Seal them by pressing the edges together.

4
Done

On the charcoal grill, cook directly over medium coals, roughly 18 minutes or until done (160 degrees F); turning only once.

5
Done

If using a broiler, place the patties on the rack of a broiler pan. Place the rack 3–4ʺ below the heat and leave them to cook. Follow above charcoal directions.

6
Done

On the last 3 minutes of cooking, lightly brush the French bread slices with olive oil and grill/broil until toasted.

7
Done

Place a patty on each slice, topped with onion relish to serve.
