Polyanthas are generally low growing, bushy plants. With average height of 18-24 inches. It consists of small leaves and dense clusters of small flowers in shades of white, pink, red and orange. The flowers may bloom in single semi-double or double. It blooms in spring and continue to flower until frost. Polyantha roses are used for bedding, low hedges and foregrounds.
Polyantha are generous rebloomers that bear repeated flushes of small (1-2 in [2.5-5.1 cm]) clustered flowers throughout creams, pinks and gold and foliage is notably disease resistant, this characteristic combined with their tolerance for alkaline soil and intense sun. It is perfect for containers, in which compact plant is desired.
Varieties of Polyantha Roses :
Cecile Brunner Roses (Introduced 1881) : Small, exquisite, coral pink buds of Cecile rose have made it quintessential boutonnière flower. Generally the flowers open into something like hybrid tea blossom just 1-2 inch in diameter. Flowers have light but distinctively spicy fragrance. The stems are smooth & brownish purple thorn is few but sharp & hooked. Foliage is smooth dark green. Generally the color of rose is pink. Besides there is also climbing form, which in mild climates reach a height of 20 ft.
China Doll : China Doll produce large flushes of china rose pink pom-pom blooms. Usually flower blooms are double, cupped and of moderate size for polyantha. It appears in large trusses on a bushy plant with leathery foliage.
Doc : This rose is introduced in the early 1950's. The small blooms are phlox pink and appear in tight, compact clusters. Foliage is dark, leathery and pointed in a manner typical of the dwarves. The bush itself is compact, making an excellent subject for a container.
Elizabeth Navarro : The plant is upright of moderate height with an abundance of light pink well shaped buds and blooms that are borne in very large cluster. The foliages are light green.
Exellenz Von Schubert : This rose grows as a climber in a garden. The flowers are dark carmine, nearly purple. It is small blooms in cluster. Foliage is generally dark and green & attractive which is good since it tend to be late bloomer. The flower is a cross of polyantha "Mme Nobert Levasseur" and hybrid tea "Frau Karl Druschki".
Happy : Happy is well named rose and is quite cheerful in the garden. Generally it is low growing bush with dark green glossy foliage, which produces abundant sprays of bright currant red blooms. It is a cross of hybrid musk 'Robin Hood' by a seedling of polyantha 'Katharina Zeimet'.
Katharina Zeimet : It is a small upright rose bush with abundance of pure white, small, loosely formed blooms which appear in large clusters. Foliage is small and green. It is a cross of polyantha "Etoile de Mai" and polyantha "Marie Pavie".
La Marne : It is upright bush that produces unique pink blooms blushed white those colors with age. The habit is loose and bush seems constantly in bloom.
Lullaby : The height of the Lullaby bush is about 4 feet by 4 feet. Being taller and more upright, the bush is vigorous and has fairy dark, leathery disease resistant foliage. Once it blooms it continues through out the year and small clusters are formed with white blooms blushing pink in the centre.
Marie Pavie : Marie Pavie produce moderate sized white blooms with a flesh centre. It is upright and spreading rose bush with fairly large foliage. It has sweet fragrance. Foliage has no prickles, except on the backs of the leaves.
Paquerette : It is the smallish bush with many pure white blooms. Usually blooms are double, cupped with slight fragrance. It has few prickles, glossy foliage and bright green shems.
Red Fairy : It is a brick red look alike that blooms in large upright abundant sprays. It contains few prickles, foliage is medium green, semi glossy and bush is quite spreading. It is cross of 'Simon Robinson' by an unknown seeding.
Verdun : It is a compact, upright rose bush with small flower of carmine red, tending to purple. The flowers are produced in tight clusters of 25-50.
