Soap Nuts are small berries that grow on the tree growing wild in Western part of Nepal. The nuts is gathered by hand, dried by the sun, and then deseeded. Soap Nuts contain saponin that release mild soapsuds when wet. Soap Nuts have strong antibacterial properties that effectively replace chemical detergents and soaps.

Soapnuts have been used as a natural detergent for centuries. Soapnuts come from the fruit of the trees of the sapindus genus, from the family Sapindacea. Its detergent attribute is Sapindus mukorossi, simply known as Soap Nut Tree.

Soapnuts are a small yellow-brown fruit around 1-2 cm in diameter; containing a black seed. The shells contain a substance called saponin, usually present in quantities around 10-15%. Saponin dissolve in water to form suds, as well as dissolve fats and oils to lift dust. Soapnuts are also suitable to use in greywater and blackwater systems.

Basically, the soapnuts are two types - Sapindus Trifoliatus and Sapoindus Mukorossi

Sapindus Trifoliatus: Sapindus Trifoliatus is a smaller tree typically found in Southern India and Pakistan. It produces a smaller fruit. It contains less saponin then mukorossi.

Sapoindus Mukorossi: The Sapoindus Mukorossi soap nuts shells are larger, brighter in color and gloss, and high saponin contains it is available in Nepal in large volume.
